Imagine visiting the dentist in Ajax for much-needed or elective dental care and experiencing a pain-free, relaxing treatment. With sedation dentistry, this can become a reality.
At Durham Dental Solutions, we recognize that some people fear visiting a dentist in Whitby and may delay essential dental care due to deep-seated fears and anxieties.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, but we can help you with sedation dentistry in Newcastle.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the careful use of sedatives to induce feelings of calm and relaxation, thereby blocking unwanted sensations such as pain and discomfort. Every sedation treatment provided is customized to accommodate your unique needs, whether you experience mild, moderate or more significant dental fears.
When there is even the slightest risk of pain or discomfort, we always use local anesthesia to block these sensations. A local anesthetic can often be combined with sedation dentistry, and we offer three different kinds to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed in the dental chair.
These are:
- Nitrous oxide.
- Oral sedation.
- IV sedation.
Nitrous Oxide
Better known as laughing gas, this is the mildest form of dental sedation in Pickering. You simply breathe in the gas shortly before and during your treatment. It takes effect very quickly, so you soon feel calmer, relaxed, and able to receive treatment comfortably.
Once we finish your treatment, we remove the mask, and before long, the gas is expelled from your body, and you will be back to normal. You may even drive yourself home afterwards if you wish.
Oral Sedation
Our Brooklin dentist will prescribe a sedative pill that you take shortly before your appointment. It will have taken effect by the time you sit in the dental chair. Oral sedation provides a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide, so you may feel sleepy and very deeply relaxed.
Sometimes oral sedation in Clarington can be combined with nitrous oxide to enhance the effect. You will need someone with you to take you home after receiving oral sedation, as you cannot drive yourself.
IV Sedation
Intravenous or IV sedation is administered through a vein in the crook of your arm or the back of your hand. We bring in a certified anesthesiologist to administer this treatment and continuously monitor you during the procedure. IV sedation tends to contain an amnesiac, so afterwards you will remember little or nothing about your treatment.
IV sedation is ideal if you need lengthier treatment or require a complex procedure. It may mean that we can complete more treatment during a single appointment. Just like oral sedation, you will need someone with you to take you home. Ideally, they will need to stay with you for a while afterwards to ensure you are fully recovered. You shouldn’t make any important decisions, sign any documents, or operate any machinery or a vehicle for 24 hours afterwards.
