A Brief History of Dental Implants

Tooth loss isn’t a modern problem, and our ancestors were really quite innovative in replacing missing teeth. Early versions of dental implants were discovered in ancient China, where bamboo pegs carved into the shape of teeth were used as artificial replacements. Also, it was relatively common for missing teeth to be replaced with teeth from other people or animals, and it’s difficult to imagine how painful this must’ve been, and especially when these implants became infected! Archaeologists have discovered other materials such as jade or even seashells were used to replace missing teeth.

It wasn’t until the 18th century that researchers began experimenting with gold alloys to make dental implants, but rejection was a frequent problem. Finally, in 1952 a Swedish orthopedic surgeon called Per-Ingvar Brånemark discovered that titanium was a highly biocompatible metal. He placed the very first dental implant in 1965 and continued to spend many years researching this technology. Brånemark didn’t publish his findings until years later when modern dental implant dentistry began to evolve quickly.

During the following decades, dental companies invested significantly in developing and testing new dental implant systems. Soon, titanium alloy implants were developed, and which helped to encourage the process of osseointegration, where the implant gradually fuses with the jawbone.

Cone Beam CT Scanner
Our cone beam CT scanner in Courtice is a crucial piece of equipment when planning and placing dental implants accurately. It provides our dentists with detailed and extremely accurate 3D images of your jaws, so we can see the precise location of vital structures like blood vessels and nerves, and we can assess the quality and quantity of your jawbone. These images let us determine the best location for each implant, making the most of available bone, and ensuring that once restored, the implant will look and feel fantastic. The digital plan is transferred into the real world, using computer-guided implant surgery to insert your implants.

iTero 3D Oral Scanner
Hate the thought of traditional tray impressions? Does the mere thought make you want to gag? Don’t worry, as we use digital dental impressions here in Brooklin. Digital dental impressions are more precise and more comfortable than traditional dental impressions and help to fabricate extremely well-fitting restorations. Instead of a tray, an advanced, radiation-free laser scans your mouth, creating a perfect replica which is emailed securely to the dental lab.
