Finally, in 1952 a Swedish orthopedic surgeon called Per-Ingvar Brånemark discovered that titanium was a highly biocompatible metal. He placed the very first dental implant in 1965 and continued to spend many years researching this technology. Brånemark didn’t publish his findings until years later when modern dental implant dentistry began to evolve quickly.
During the following decades, dental companies invested significantly in developing and testing new dental implant systems. Soon, titanium alloy implants were developed, and which helped to encourage the process of osseointegration, where the implant gradually fuses with the jawbone.
