If you suffer from dental fears and phobias, then you are not alone. In fact, if data from Stats Canada is accurate, then a large proportion of the Canadian population shares your feelings. Unfortunately, avoiding essential dental care does increase the risk of tooth loss and can make it tricky to receive the very best restorative care. The best and most advanced solution for tooth loss is to consider dental implants in Ajax but for people with dental fears and phobias, dental implant treatment can seem like an impossibility. This is because it does require a short surgical procedure and even though our dentist in Newcastle will ensure you cannot feel a thing, we do realize this isn’t sufficient for people with deep-seated fears. This is where sedation dentistry can help, allowing you to comfortably receive the dental implant treatment you need and desire while providing you with natural-looking replacement teeth.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is also sometimes called sleep dentistry because it uses sedatives that can help you feel deeply relaxed or which can even send you to sleep during treatment. It’s a great option if the mere thought of dental treatment makes you feel anxious. Sedation dentistry has already helped many people to enjoy better dental health and to conquer their dental fears.
Sedation Levels Are Individually Customized
There are three different levels of sedation available here at Durham Dental Solutions. The exact amount of sedation administered is always carefully customized for every patient. If you only experience mild anxiety, then you might be most comfortable with nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas. With this treatment, laughing gas is inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose and is administered continually during treatment. It quickly takes effect and should help you feel nicely relaxed. Once the gas is turned off, it’s soon eliminated from your body so if you wish, you can even drive yourself home.
For people who feel a little more anxious, we offer oral sedation. Our dentist in Clarington will prescribe an oral sedative which is taken prior to your appointment so that once you sit in the dental chair, you will already feel very relaxed. Sometimes we may choose to enhance the effects of an oral sedative, using laughing gas so that you feel even calmer.
If you require a complex treatment or feel more anxious at the thought of receiving dental implant treatment in Whitby, then we may suggest intravenous sedation. The sedative is given intravenously by our dental anesthesiologist and you will feel so relaxed that you may even go to sleep. Afterwards, it’s unlikely that you will remember anything about your treatment so it’s the perfect solution if you need quite a bit of dental care to restore dental health. With oral sedation and intravenous sedation, you will need someone with you who can take you home and who can preferably stay with you for the rest of the day.
Your Safety and Comfort Is Our Priority
As with all the treatments provided at our dental office in Pickering, your safety is always our main priority. We carefully screen our patients before providing sedation dentistry and during your appointment, you will be continually monitored while under sedation. Every precaution is taken to keep you safe. Once treatment is completed, we will ask that you remain with us for a short while, just to ensure you are completely okay before we send you home.
