Dental Implants and Bone Loss

Dental implants have a high success rate although they are still not immune from problems. A small percentage of dental implants can still experience bone loss over time.

We want to place dental implants in Bowmanville in areas that abundant in bone and gums. This is the foundation for long term success. If the area is thin or lacking in gum tissue or bone, then it should be rebuilt or augmented prior to dental implant surgery although in some cases this can be done simultaneously during the dental implant placement.

Around natural teeth, we can get gum recession leading to root exposure. Teeth that are replaced with dental implants can sometimes experience bone loss or gum shrinkage around the implant itself. In those rare circumstances that this happens, there are ways to treat these ‘ailing’ or unhealthy implants by adding gum and/or bone to the area to correct it.

Dental implants do not have any nerves to tell you that there is a problem happening. That is why its very important for all patients that have dental implant treatment to follow up for regular visits , x-rays and bite checks every 3-4 months to ensure there are no problems.
