Most medications do not interfere with dental implant procedures. However, concerns about patients taking bisphosphonates will be discussed in a different blog article. Today’s focus is on blood-thinning medications. Common blood thinners include aspirin, warfarin (Coumadin), and Plavix.
For most procedures, we need to consider the pros and cons of stopping the medication. There are reasons why patients are on such medications, and there are risks associated with stopping them. Most of the time, we are trying to do a very noninvasive surgery that would minimize bleeding. A consult with your MD before surgery involves deciding whether a dose needs to be reduced or stopped before implant surgery.
