Blood Thinner Medications and Dental Implants, What you need to know

Most medications do not interfere with dental implant procedures.  There are concerns on patients that are taking bisphosphantes which will be discussed in a different blog article.  Today’s focus is on on blood thinning medications.  Common blood thinners include aspirin, warfarin (coumadin) and plavix.

For most procedures, we need to look at the pro/con of going off the medication.  There are reasons why patients are on such medications and there are risks for going off of them.  Most of the time we are trying to do a very non invasive surgery which would minimize bleeding.  A consult with your MD prior to surgery involves deciding together whether a dose needs to be reduced or stopped prior to implant surgery.
